Bovine milk carbohydrates for infant formula

During her PhD studies, Louise Margrethe Arildsen Jakobsen researched bovine milk carbohydrates and their effects on the infant gut microbiota. Bovine milk carbohydrates share unique similarities to carbohydrates from human breast milk and therefore represent potential functional ingredients for infant formula. Louise Margrethe Arildsen Jakobsen studied how lactose, galacto oligosaccharides and bovine milk oligosaccharides differentially stimulated or inhibited the metabolic activity and growth of selected infant gut bacteria. The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how infant formula may be enriched to better serve as an alternative to human milk when breastfeeding is not possible. 

The PhD study was completed at Department of Food Science, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
