Material Properties from Chemical Bonds

PhD defence, Friday 24 November 2023, Thomas Bjørn Egede Grønbech

Thomas Bjørn Egede Grønbech

During his PhD studies, Thomas Bjørn Egede Grønbech researched the chemical bonds inside solid, crystalline materials exhibiting favourable properties for thermoelectric application or magnetism. The bonds within these materials can be modelled experimentally based on single-crystal x-ray diffraction from which the properties of the materials can be understood. Thomas Bjørn Egede Grønbech researched a connection between the structures of the materials, their chemical bonds, and their properties. Particularly, a set of inorganic compounds with low thermal conductivity and a series of magnetic metal organic compounds are understood based on the observed bonds.

The new research findings contribute to the understanding of material properties in the language of chemistry and can support rational design of materials.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
