Sculpted nanotrampolines for photonics and sensing

During his PhD studies, Ali worked on suspended dielectric ultrathin (~200 nm) films, which, due to their low mass and outstanding mechanical and optical properties, are ideal candidates for developing ultracompact integrated photonic or sensing devices. Using nanolithography techniques Ali patterned these fragile films with subwavelength grating structures and developed non-invasive experimental methods as well as advanced numerical methods in order to characterize and simulate their structural, vibrational and optical behavior.

Using these sculpted nanotrampolines in photonics and sensing applications, Ali contributed to the development of ultracompact optical spatial differentiators and to the realization of ultrashort, narrow-linewidth optical microcavities.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
