Ensemble Visualization for Progressive Analytics

Ensemble Visualization for Progressive Analytics

Research area and project description:
Progressive Analytics is a stepwise data analysis paradigm that yields in-progress results which refine over time. It is still a rather young research direction that promises to deliver swift visual feedback even for long-running analyses on large datasets – like Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Simulation Models, Data Mining, or any mix thereof. How to interact with such ongoing computations to gauge their outputs and to steer their stream of generated analysis results towards data subspaces of interest remains an open research question.

The idea behind this PhD project is to explore Ensemble Visualizations to answer that research question. Ensemble Visualizations do not just show one analysis result, but multiple, so as to provide an overview of the diversity of possible results in the spirit of What-If analyses or Multiverse analyses. To that end, this PhD project will look into how to generate, visualize, interactively manage, and gain insight from dozens, potentially hundreds of progressively refining parallel streams of analysis results.

This groundbreaking new approach will open-up Progressive Analytics to completely new software architectures for realizing such analyses on one side, and to completely new application scenarios making use of these analyses on the other side. Research on this project is carried out at the intersection of Data Visualization, Human-Computer Interaction, and Concurrent Programming. It will be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues from the University of Pittsburg (concurrent software architectures) and from Aarhus University’s Department of Engineering (artifact detection in timeseries data).

This PhD project is fully funded as part “ArtiPlex”, a project granted by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond).

Qualifications and specific competences:
To apply for the position, you must have a relevant Master’s degree (or equivalent) and excellent computer programming skills. Prior experience in at least one of the following areas is of advantage: data visualization, data science, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, or concurrent programming.

You are expected to bring or develop the necessary soft skills for working in teams, as well as for managing and communicating your research progress. The same holds for the necessary hard skills in software development and scientific writing.
