Revealing the Molecular Fingerprints of Arctic Aerosols

PhD defence. Friday 9 October 2026. Lotte Dyrholm Thomsen

Lotte Dyrholm Thomsen

During her PhD studies, Lotte Dyrholm Thomsen researched the molecular composition of organic atmospheric aerosols and dissolved organic matter in the Arctic, with a particular focus on Greenland. Atmospheric aerosols are small particles in the atmosphere that affect the climate, and their climate effect is associated with high uncertainties.

Lotte Dyrholm Thomsen studied the organic fraction of Arctic aerosols with a focus on their formation from dissolved organic matter in the ocean.

This PhD project is the first to characterize the molecular composition of Arctic organic aerosols and examine the impact of direct emissions of marine dissolved organic matter on a molecular level. By characterizing the molecular composition of organic aerosol across multiple Arctic sites, the study provides a broader perspective of Arctic organic aerosols.

The PhD study was completed at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
