Improving industrial training experience in virtual reality through haptic feedback

PhD defence, Tuesday, 25 February 2025, Chiwoong Hwang

Chiwoong Hwang

During his PhD study, Chiwoong Hwang explored haptic technologies for industrial training in Virtual Reality (VR), based on a real-world scenario in collaboration with a Danish company. VR training offers numerous benefits, such as reduced costs and a safer learning environment. However, replicating the physical interaction crucial for manual skill acquisition remains a challenge in virtual settings.

To tackle this issue, Chiwoong Hwang investigated state-of-the-art haptic solutions aimed at enhancing the perception of physical properties, such as weight, and improving the overall user experience in VR. His work contributes valuable insights into the design of haptic feedback and virtual training systems, emphasizing user-centric approaches.

The PhD study was completed at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
