Understanding the Catalytic Mechanisms of Bio-Fuel Production

PhD defence, Wednesday 9th April 2025, Martin Hedevang

Martin Hedevang

During his PhD studies, Martin Hedevang researched the catalyst used for enhancing the quality of bio-fuels created for biomass. This technology is crucial for developing alternatives to fossil fuels for the aviation and shipping industry. Martin Hedevang studied how molecules like water, hydrogen and simple oxygen-containing hydrocarbons can change the structure and chemical composition of the catalyst, focusing on the stability of the catalyst.

The research presents mechanisms for reactions relevant to upgrading bio-oils to biofuels. The increased understanding can be used to develop better catalysts, increasing the efficiency of biofuel production for the aviation and shipping industries.

The PhD study was completed at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
