Development of biohybrid interlocked molecules for precise cell regulation

Research area and project description:
Are you passionate about biomolecular design? Are you interested in developing dynamic systems and molecular motors for precise cell regulation?

A 3-year PhD position is available for the development of biohybrid interlocked nucleic acids in the group of Assist. Professor Julián Valero, located at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO) at Aarhus University. The position is available from November 2026 or shortly after.

The aim of the project is to develop a novel class of nucleic-acid based, biohybrid interlocked molecules (BIMs) for precise biomolecular regulation. This research involves a multifaceted approach, including: i) the design and assembly of nucleic acid-based interlocked motors and switches; ii) establishing the principles to operate them in vitro and in cells; iii) study of their properties and functions for enhanced cell regulation; and iv) application of these adaptative systems for reversible control of cell function, further exploring their potential biomedical use.

This position is part of an EU funded ERC interdisciplinary, collaborative project at the interface between nucleic-acid chemistry, DNA/RNA nanotechnology and cell biology.

Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree or in the process of getting a Master’s degree in nanoscience, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related fields, preferably with a good track record.

  • You should have hands-on experience in nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) experimental work.
  • The ideal candidate should possess knowledge in cell culture, cellular assays (microscopy, flow cytometry).
  • Background on DNA and RNA nanotechnology and nucleic acid chemistry/bioconjugation reactions is a plus.
  • You are a team-player, collaborative and highly motivated to pursue scientific milestones of high standard.
  • You are curious and self-driven, willing to learn new techniques. You should enjoy working on multidisciplinary projects and solving nanotechnology and synthetic biology challenges.
  • Good communications skills in written and oral English, as this will be part of your daily work.
