Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Mathematics programme. The position is available from August 2025 or later.
Title:
Understanding C*-algebras by inducing symmetries
Research area and project description:
This project is concerned with the study of groupoid C*-algebras. In recent years groupoid C*-algebras have come to play a prominent role in C*-algebra theory, as it has become evident that they can model many interesting classes of C*-algebras, like C*-algebras arising from dynamical systems. It is in general an open problem to describe the ideal structure of C*-algebras. The aim of the project is to describe the ideal structure and other properties of groupoid C*-algebras, both by developing general theory and by studying specific classes of examples, like the ones arising from dynamical systems. This PhD position is financed by the Villum Young Investigator grant “Understanding C*-algebras by inducing symmetries” held by Johannes Christensen.
For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. When - as here - you apply for a specific project, please simply copy the project description above, and upload it as a PDF in the application. If you wish to, you can indicate an URL where further information can be found.
Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants must have completed a relevant Master’s degree in mathematics by the beginning of the PhD. The topic of the PhD project is C*-algebras, so applicants should have a strong background in analysis, and some background in the field of operator algebras can be an advantage.
Place of employment and place of work:
The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is Department of Mathematics. Ny Munkegade 118, 8000 Aarhus, Denmark.
