Objectives of the course:

This course aims to study the method Cryo Electron Microscopy and discuss novel research within the field of single particle CryoEM. Through the course the student will gain a detailed knowledge of the method, the different applications and a general knowledge about single particle studies. 

 

Learning outcomes:

• Identify, present and discuss scientific texts
• Obtain a thorough understanding of the theoretical aspect of the CryoEM method and its applications
• Understand both relevance and challenges of the technique in regards to the study of single-particle CryoEM
• Constructively read scientific text with relation to the project

 

Compulsory program:

Reading relevant chapter of the textbook as well as participating actively in the discussion and give small presentations when relevant. 

 

Course content

The study group will be based on the book “Single-particle Cryo-EM of Biological Macromolecules” by Glaser, Nogales and Chiu (2021) and recent papers. Participants must read/prepare the relevant pages for each meeting.

The course will take place every second week, with an in dept discussion about chapters/articles where a chairperson leads the discussion. Estimated 3-4 hours of preparation is needed in advance for every 1 hour meeting. 

 

Prerequisites:

• General knowledge of molecular biology and a general idea about the technique
• Interest in single-particle CryoEM and in obtaining a deeper understanding
